Department of Theoretical Physics, IFIN-HH

Graduate degree supervision and employment as Research Assistant
Senior members of the Geometry and Physics Group can act as supervisors or co-supervisors of MS or PhD candidates. Students from the University of Bucharest who are selected by our group are eligible for employment as Research Assistants within the Department of Theoretical Physics of IFIN-HH. Such employment must be approved by the Head of Department and the Department Council.
As a general rule, our group does not supervise MS or PhD students from the University of Bucharest who did not previously acquire some familiarity with our subjects of interest and with the mathematics level expected from them by gaining some experience through an internship. Students interested in prospective supervision by a member of our group should be familiar with our minimal curriculum and are encouraged to consult our recommended graduate curriculum.
MS and PhD supervision
To apply for MS or PhD supervision by a member of our group, a student must contact that person directly, sending the following materials to her or him through email:
1. An application letter detailing the scientific interests of the applicant and the applicant's motivation for seeking mentorship by a member our group;
2. A copy of diplomas which the student already holds (namely High School [Baccalaureate] and Bachelor of Science, if applying for MS supervision; also Master of Science, if that diploma has already been issued and the student is applying for PhD supervision);
3. An academic transcript for the course of study already completed at the student's university (starting with the first undergraduate year);
4. A recent CV;
5. A standard passport photo.
Note: Proficiency in spoken and written English is a minimal condition for functioning as a scientist in the 21st century. Our group does not consider applicants who are not proficient in the English language. All scientific seminars organized by the group are conducted in English, as are all activities of the Trans-Carpathian Student Circle.
Employment as Research Assistant
Members of our group who accept a student for MS or PhD supervision can recommend that student for employment as Research Assistant within the Department of Theoretical Physics. Once such a recommendation has been made by the prospective supervisor, a student of University of Bucharest who seeks employment in DTP should also send the following materials through email directly to that supervisor:
A. A letter (addressed to the Head of Department) requesting employment as a Research Assistant within DTP;
B. A copy of the student's identity card;
C. Proof of student status for the current academic year within the University of Bucharest, specifying the graduate program (MS or PhD) in which the student is currently enrolled;
D. Documents attesting other academic or scientific merits (specializations, work experience in research groups within Romania or abroad etc.);
E. Employment record, if the student has previous work experience;
F. Copy of birth certificate;
G. Copy of marriage certificate (if applicable);
H. Copies of birth certificates of the applicant's children (if applicable);
I. Copy of criminal record ("cazier judiciar").
Current bureaucratic rules require some of the documents mentioned above to also be sent in physical form to the Head of Department. The list of those documents can be found here (in Romanian).
After receiving all documents, the recommendation for employment made by the supervisor must be approved by the Head of Department and the Department Council, who will decide the quantum of employment and salary for those students whose employment application is successful.
Employment as Research Assistant in DTP is formalized through a 1-year work contract. The contract can be renewed for subsequent years conditional on the recommendation of the supervisor and on satisfactory progress towards completion of the MS or PhD degree. Renewal of the contract requires approval by the Head of Department and the Department Council.
Note that any graduate student member of the Geometry and Physics Group must agree to certain common sense rules in order to gain and maintain access to the buildings and facilities of the Horia Hulubei Institute.
